27 – 28 October 2011

Morris and Crane Aid proudly hosted an open day in October 2011. These two days enabled potential customers as well as existing customers to experience the legend of Morris.

Our guests arrived and we only required a business card which enabled entrance to our Head Office premises. At registration they were given a gift bag, safety glasses and ear plugs.

A Morris or a Crane Aid representative then took our guests on a tour of our factory which enabled them to see exactly what goes on and the processes that are involved in crane manufacturing. From the girder assembly rig to the machine shop and fitting shop, etc, all processes were explained in detail as well as showing our jam-packed factory full of cranes.

After the factory tour, the guests were taken on a tour of the training centre where our Crane Maintenance Training takes place. Next stop was the marquee where we had our suppliers exhibiting and each one had a stand. This is where Morris/Crane Aid staff, our guests and our suppliers networked. Food, drinks and ice cream were available as well as lucky draw prizes being given away.

The Morris and Crane Aid Open Day proved to an exciting fun-filled event where customers and potential customers got to experience the legend of Morris.

12 – 14 May 2011

A chilly weekend was the start of the 2011 Morris and Crane Aid Sales Conference. All staff were ready to tackle the weekend all dressed in branded golf shirts and jackets.

A well overdue conference brought the sales team, branch managers nationwide and a few top suppliers to one venue – Didima in the Drakensburg.

The purpose of this conference was to pull the Crane Aid and Morris teams together and to prove that “together we can do more”. It is not everyday you get everybody together to share and experience the power of knowledge and learning.

Day One was filled with intriguing presentations from our Morris and Crane Aid branch managers, sales team from Head Office and suppliers. From the introduction of the new Morris hoist, to Variable Speed Drives on Cranes, the information proved to be fascinating. To complete an informative day we ended off with a social braai to get to know one another better.

With an early start to Day Two, there were additional presentations ranging from classifications of Cranes to top projects that had taken place in each individual branch of the company.

Then the fun started as everybody had the afternoon off for team building. Teams were formed for Archery, Zip Line, Paintball, etc.

Didima turned out to be the perfect surroundings for our conference in the Drakensburg and the Morris and Crane Aid teams proved that “together we can do more”.

“Morris” was welcomed aboard by the “Dream Big Montrose Night Cricket Challenge” in Parkmore, Sandton.

Teams from across the board including Montrose, Deinfern and Crawford to name a few were part of a 6 week challenge. “Morris” being one of the main sponsors continued to shine and appeared on all of the school team cricket shirts, with the banners flying high and kids leaping around practicing and eagerly awaiting their turn in the cricket challenge.

Burgers, ice cream, parents, kids and sponsors made the event jam packed and enjoyable to attend. 4’s and 6’s being smacked by the teams trying to score points for their schools.

Morris “The True Legend” in Crane manufacturing and maintenance will continue to be a sponsor at the night cricket. Being alive at the event and providing support to Montrose Primary School enabled exposure and the “Morris” name certainly did shine through.

Decades of Legends

30 November 2009

Long Service Awards were awarded in 2009 at Morris Material Handling and Crane Aid to recognise staff for their commitment, dedication and service excellence to the company.

A total of 54 staff members received awards for their 10 to 30 years of service. The awards were as follows:

10 years of service – 26 staff members

15 years of service – 16 staff members

20 years of service – 8 staff members

25 years of service – 2 staff members

30 years of service – 2 staff members

39 staff members were from Head Office and 15 were from the various branches Nationwide.

Employee loyalty is demonstrated through members that have been with the company since its establishment in 1952. “Our employees are the pillars of the company, holding a wealth of knowledge and experience that has made the company the success it is today,” stated Loris Chiappa, Managing Director of Morris Material Handling.

It is a known fact that the most important resource in any organisation is its employees and without such, failure is imminent. Since the company’s inception in South Africa, Morris Material Handling as a whole has undergone drastic changes in the last few decades which have affected its employees and persuaded some to choose different careers. The employees that received awards were therefore acknowledged and commended for their hard work and contribution towards the achievement of a company that has become a legend in the industry.

Loris believes: “Apart from skills and knowledge, what makes a person employable is good attitude. I must say that Morris is fortunate to have staff with excellent attitude. There are many fine examples in the recipients that received the long service awards.”

He continues “I am pleased to note that our staff do not shy away from challenges and are able to seize the opportunities to seek new and better ways of doing things. Ensuring that the project is completed on time through self sacrifice, providing good service, using good ideas to ensure smooth operations, going that extra mile, using initiative, taking responsibility are all attributes of these recipients. All these prove that they have what it takes to deliver services of the highest standard. Through the example they set and the role they play, they motivate those around them to give of their best as well,” concluded Loris.

Morris congratulates all staff on being dedicated and loyal. They truly are legends of Morris and Crane Aid. They will together continue to succeed and deliver customer satisfaction.

18 November 2009

Morris Material Handling SA (Pty) Ltd, specialist crane supplier, was instrumental in providing the cranes required in the tunnel construction of the R25,4 billion Gautrain rapid-rail link.

In total, six Morris/ABUS overhead travelling cranes and one hoist was supplied to Bombardier and the Bombela Concession Company for the momentous project. These comprised of two 40t, two 30t and two 10t cranes.

The 40t x 14m span and 40t x 20m span double girder ABUS mucking cranes were commissioned at the Mushroom and Sandton South shafts respectively. With another 10t x 20m span double girder ABUS crane was supplied to the auxiliary Sandton South Shaft.

A 30t x 11m span double girder ABUS crane was installed at the E5 Emergency Shaft in Rosebank, and a further 30t x 10m span crane for the Park Station Shaft. These mucking cranes were used extensively for the tunnelling of the various stations.

The final crane and 2t electrical hoist will be used at the Maintenance facility in Midrand. For this duty, Morris Material Handing specified a 10t x 20,1m span double girder ABUS crane.

Morris/ABUS Overhead travelling cranes have a load capacity up to 120t, suitable for area-coverage material handling. “Four main types are available: these include single-girder overhead travelling cranes, double-girder overhead travelling cranes for heavy duty work and wide spans and underslung travelling cranes for buildings with special conditions. The fourth type available as a standard is the wall travelling crane, installed on a separate crane track beneath the other crane types in order to optimise material handling,” explains Morris Material Handling Sales & Marketing Director Mark Walter.
